News in brief: 23 January 2026

- Danish pension company PensionDanmark has signed a contract with the Establishment and Terrain Command for the construction and operation of new accommodation conditions at 11 Danish barracks.

The Establishment and Terrain Command, together with a consortium led by PensionDanmark, signed the public-private partnership (PPP) agreement presented by Denmark’s Minister of Defence, Troels Lund Poulsen, at the beginning of December 2025. The construction includes approximately 1,600 new and up-to-date accommodation facilities for conscripts and employees. Under the second sub-agreement of the Defence Agreement 2024-2033, the number of conscripts will increase to 6,500 for defence annually, and in most cases, military service will be extended to 11 months, resulting in a need for more and better accommodation facilities. All companies had the opportunity to participate in the tender and negotiation phase of the PPP project. PensionDanmark’s consortium was selected due to the assessment of price, concept and quality. As a PPP project, the agreement means that the supplier must construct and subsequently be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the buildings during the 20-year contract period. After these 20 years, the defence will take over the buildings at a pre-agreed price and condition.

The fund oversees the pensions of approximately 80,000 participants and has assets under management totalling over €15bn. The onboarding of Van Lanschot Kempen Investment Management started earlier this month (January 2026), and fiduciary advisory services are being gradually implemented. Van Lanschot Kempen Investment Management will take on full fiduciary management of all SPW’s assets from 1 January 2027.

- The Netherlands' Pensioenfonds UWV has announced that it will transition to the new pension system on 1 January 2028.

The fund explained that all individuals with a pension from Pensioenfonds UWV, whether they are currently contributing, hold a previously accrued pension, or are already receiving a pension, will be transitioned to the new pension scheme. The fund will send out two personal calculations to these individuals, explaining what the new rules mean for their pension. The first calculation is an estimate, which is expected to be received in October/November 2027, and the final calculation is expected to be received between 1 January and 1 June 2028.

- Skandia, the Swedish insurance company, has expanded the managerial support included in its health insurance.

The extended management support means managers with access to Skandia's health insurance can receive free support in matters relating to employees' health and work-oriented rehabilitation. The support is provided by phone or video call by experienced counsellors from Sophiahemmet Rehab Center. This expansion aims to provide managers with advice at an early stage and contribute to a more sustainable working life for both managers and employees. Each case includes up to three indicative conversations, for example, difficult or sensitive conversations, workplace conflicts and employees who are on sick leave or at risk of being on sick leave. Manager support is part of Skandia's health insurance - a preventive insurance for companies that provides employees with early support when they are feeling unwell, for example, due to low mood, pain, stress or sleep difficulties. It doesn’t matter whether the problems are work-related or private.
