Germany’s VBL appoints Christian Piwarz to board of directors

German pension provider Versorgungsanstalt des Bundes und der Länder (VBL) has appointed Christian Piwarz, Saxon Minister of Finance, as the new alternating chairman of the Federal and State Pension Institute's administrative board.

He succeeds Hartmut Vorjohann, who held the position for two years.

Since 18 April, Piwarz has also assumed a seat on the VBL Administrative Board.

Now, he has been elected as their chairman by the members of the participating employers.

He will head the board in rotation each calendar year with the chairman of the employee representatives, Detlef Raabe, who will hold the office in 2025.

Piwarz is a fully qualified lawyer with extensive committee work experience.

Before entering politics, he worked as a self-employed attorney.

From 2017 to 2024, he served as Saxony's Minister of State for Culture.

At Vorjohann's farewell ceremony, VBL president, Angelika Stein-Homberg, praised the departing chairman: "I have always experienced him as a very open and cooperative conversation partner. I thank him very much for his goal-oriented work on the VBL board of directors."

Stein-Homberg also commented on Piwarz's appointment: "Christian Piwarz is a good choice as alternating chairman of the board of directors.

"Like Mr. Vorjohann before him, Mr. Piwarz is also Minister of State for Finance in the free state of Saxony. This ensures continuity on our board of directors.

"I wish Mr. Piwarz all the best for his new beginning," she added.
