Obituary: Tjerk Kroes

The Dutch Federation of Pension Funds (Pensioenfederatie) has announced that De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) director of economic policy, Tjerk Kroes, has died.

Kroes had made an active contribution to the work of Pensioenfederatie, which said it had lost a “wonderful and highly valued colleague”.

Kroes was an economist, with his most recent role being director of economic policy at DNB, where he served as the representative to the Dutch government on the new Dutch pension system.

Prior to this, he was director of strategy, policy, development and communication at APG, and director of labour market and socio-economic affairs at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment.

Kroes studied economics at the University of Amsterdam, earning a PhD on international monetary economics and lending in 1996.

“Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. We wish them much strength, love, and support during this difficult time,” Pensioenfederatie said.

Kroes joined the Leiden University Supervisory Board in September 2025. Leiden University Supervisory Board and Executive Board said: “Tjerk brought not only his extensive knowledge and expertise in the fields of economics and finance to the Supervisory Board, but also his warm personality.

“He always approached subjects with great curiosity and a sense of humour, without losing sight of their gravity and importance. In doing so, he had a keen eye for the human side of matters.

“Although he had only been with us for a relatively short time, we will greatly miss his contribution, as well as his person.”
