Non-enrolled worker growth outstrips AE growth for 20th consecutive month

Growth in the number of non-enrolled workers in the UK has continued to outpace growth amongst those auto-enrolled into a pension in March 2022, with the gap between the two groups more than halving over the past year, according to figures from The Pensions Regulator (TPR).

As reported by our sister title, Pensions Age, TPR’s latest Automatic enrolment declaration of compliance report revealed that the number of auto-enrolled workers had increased by 19,000 to 10,676,000, whilst the number of non-enrolled workers had risen by 29,000 to 10,435,000.

This represents the 20th consecutive month that non-enrolled worker growth has outpaced auto-enrolled worker growth, with the gap between the two groups more than halving from 577,000 to 241,000 during this time.

The update also revealed that the number of workers who were already active members of a qualifying scheme increased to 11,934,000, with 968,000 automatically re-enrolled in March 2022, up from 966,000 in February.

The number of employers confirming the completion of their declaration of compliance rose by 15,838 to 2,019,113, while the total number of eligible employers increased by 58,000 to 33,496,000

The figures for TPR's 's Automatic enrolment declaration of compliance are compiled from information submitted by employers when they complete their declaration of compliance with auto-enrolment.

TPR said the figure for auto-enrolled jobholders was likely to be higher than that shown in the report, as some employers will have reached their duties start date and automatically enrolled their eligible employees without having completed their declaration.
