AAE elects Matthias Pillaudin as chairperson and makes changes to its board

The Actuarial Association of Europe (AAE) has elected Matthias Pillaudin as its chairperson, a term that will run until October 2026.

Matthias is a fully qualified actuary (certified by the Institut des Actuaires, France) and is currently head of the actuarial department for life insurance at CNP Assurances.

He was previously a member of the AAE Insurance Committee and has served on the AAE Board of Directors since 2020. From 2020 to 2024, he was also honorary treasurer, in addition to his duties as a board member.

Commenting on his appointment, Pillaudin said it is a “privilege” to serve as chairperson of the AAE and to represent European Actuaries at “such a pivotal time”.

“I am deeply grateful to my predecessors, whose dedication and leadership have laid a strong foundation for the work ahead,” he said.

“I also sincerely thank the member associations for the trust they have placed in me - this confidence is both humbling and motivating.

“Guided by continuity, our foremost objective is to confront the major challenges of a rapidly evolving world while embracing the opportunities to advance the actuarial profession in all its dimensions.

“This requires a forward-looking approach, anchored in our strategic plan that supports our strategic objectives: enhancing relations with European institutions, promoting professionalism and developing a European community of actuaries.”

In addition to the appointment of a new chairperson, AAE also elected other members of the board at its general assembly, including Nematrian Limited managing director, Malcolm Kemp, as vice-chairperson until October 2026, who has served as a board member since 2023.

German Association of Actuaries chairwoman, Susanna Adelhardt, and Swiss Re market head L&H France, Christophe Heck, were elected as AAE board members for a term ending in October 2028.

International Actuarial Association (IAA) past president, Gábor Hanák, Austrion Life head actuary, Karin Hirhager, IAA chair of the Pensions Benefits and Social Security section, Raffaello Marcelloni, and AXA Seguros España head of business lines, Luis Saez De Jauregui, were elected as members of the AAE Nominations Panel.

They succeed Instituto dos Atuários Portugueses past president, José Mendinhos, Consulting PS independent consultant, Piotr Szlenk, ForteSecurGroup founder, Salvatore Forte, and Groupe SOS, director general of finance and investment, Romain Durand.

The general assembly also saw Swiss Re director, Lutz Wilhelmy, term as immediate past chairperson has ended, as well as Munich Re group actuarial function and head of internal model, Frank Schiller, whose term as AAE board member has also ended.

The AAE thanked those leaving for their “unlimited” commitment over the last years and wished all newly elected success in their roles.
