EC denies it plans to warn Belgium

The European Commission has poured cold water on claims that it is preparing to step in over Belgium’s political impasse.

Belgian newspaper Le Soir today published claims that the commission was set to issue a warning to the country over its inability to form a government, and the resulting impact on economic management.

However, in an official statement this afternoon, the commission stated it has “full confidence the current caretaker government will take the necessary decisions in the current context”.

“The commission also has confidence in the democratic process in Belgium.

“More specifically concerning the surveillance of the economic situation for all countries in the EU, the commission made a series of recommendations in the framework of the EU Semester, which were adopted by the Council on 11 July. The Commission is monitoring in all Member States the implementation of these recommendations. It is not foreseen to undertake any specific steps for Belgium,” the commission said.
