450 lei regional gap across Romanian public social security pensions gap

There is a gap of 450 lei across Romanian public social security pensions between different regions, the Agerpres has reported.

Data from the National Institute of Statistics revealed the region with the highest average payment is Bucharest with 1,247 lei, compared to Botosani Country with 790 lei. The average pension under the public social security system was 982 lei.

Pensioners under the social security system account for an overwhelming 99.9 percent of the total number of pensioners. Pensioners under the public social security system represent 89.5 percent of the total, and old age pensioners account for 75.9 percent of the total in this category. Pensioners in the early and part-time early retirement categories account for 1.9 percent.

Furthermore, the number of beneficiaries of the government’s Emergency Ordinance No.6/2009 on the establishment of the guaranteed minimum social pension (currently social benefits) was of 1.001 million people in Q2 2017.

Of those, 787,700 were in the public social security system (representing 16.9 per cent of all pensioners in this category); 211,100 people were in the former farmers' pension system, representing 55.7 per cent of the total; and, 2,300 persons — accounting for 1.4 per cent of this category — collect a military retirement pay.
