Lithuania repays old-age and disability pension members
20 August 2008

Written by Sophie Baker

The share of unpaid old-age or disability pensions in Lithuania was paid back to pensioners who worked between 1995 and 2002 in July 2008, according to the Republic’s Ministry of Social Security and Labour.

The repayments were announced following the Repayment of the Share of State Social Insurance Old-Age and Disability Pensions procedure. Those first to benefit from the payouts were persons aged 75 or over, and those eligible for incapacity pensions after losing 75 to 100 per cent of their working capacity.

The first phase of payments saw nearly 43,000 working pensioners receiving payouts, amounting to LTL 35 million.

The Repayment of the Share of State Social Insurance Old-Age and Disability Pensions procedure states that the second stage, due for implementation in October 2008, will repay persons who were granted incapacity pensions between January and July 2008 who lost 75 to 100 per cent working capacity, and pensioners who received compensations for care expenditure on 1 July 2008.

Those aged 65 and over will be paid in June 2009, and those younger than 65 in December 2009.

Lithuania’s Ministry of Social Security and Labour emphasised that by establishing when a person is due to be paid their share of unpaid old-age or disability pensions, their age will be evaluated on 1 January 2008. Therefore, should a person be 74 on 1 January 2008, the share of unpaid pension will be repaid in October 2008.
