Pension Fund Governance
4-5 November 2009Location: Zeist, the Netherlands
The Dutch and European pension landscape has changed rapidly in the past
few years. Induced by changes in European and local legislation aiming
at increased competition in the pension market, pension funds are faced
with the question how to organise themselves in this new environment.
Many funds decided to merge or cooperate with other pension funds. Others
turned over the complete management of the plan to fiduciary managers.
Moreover, the topic of board competence is on the agenda in many jurisdictions.
In this module, students will discuss and debate these and other aspects
of pension fund governance. An important part of the discussion and case
study will be devoted to the question: how to govern and organise a pension
fund in such a way that the interests of beneficiaries are taken care
of? In essence, that boils down to limiting the agency costs involved
with executing pension and investment services. The course will also review
several alternative pension fund governance models. Selected speakers
include Prof Dr Rob Bauer (Maastricht University), Prof Dr Jaap Koelewijn
(Nyenrode University) and Prof Dr Gordon Clark (Oxford University).
