European Pensions Awards Judging Panel 2010 - biographies:

Dorothee Gnaedinger,
Commercial Development Officer,
Pensions Management Institute (PMI)

 

Dorothee Gnaedinger is the Commercial Development Officer at the Pensions Management Institute (PMI). The PMI sets and promotes standards of excellence and lifelong learning for pensions professionals, trustees and those working in the employee benefits field.

Dorothee’s responsibilities include the management of PMI’s commercial– and media-relationships, events, product development and introducing new research initiatives. She is a regular commentator to the press and also works as a financial freelance journalist for various international pensions magazines.

Prior to joining the pensions industry, Dorothee gained a wide variety of professional experience at Amnesty International (London), the German Embassy in Washington DC, as well as discovering the Mexican way of life at (then) DaimlerChrysler in Mexico City.



Martin Leech,
Council Member and Honorary Secretary,
Irish Institute of Pension Managers (IIPM) and
Technical Manager – Legal and Compliance, Irish Life Corporate Business

 

Martin Leech has worked in the Pensions Industry in Ireland since 1970. All of this time has been spent working on occupational pension schemes with Irish Life, apart from a brief period in the UK in 1997–98 when I worked in the pensions opt-out review.

His work has covered the broad range of pensions administration with particular involvement in benefit settlement. He has worked closely with consultants and employer clients as well as scheme members. His current role as Technical Manager – Legal and Compliance at Irish Life Corporate Business involves providing technical support to colleagues and clients as well as working on regulatory matters.

He is also a Council member and the Honorary Secretary of the Irish Institute of Pension Managers (IIPM) and a past member of the Retirement Planning Council of Ireland.


Nitin Mehta,
Managing Director,
CFA Institute in EMEA



Nitin Mehta is the managing director of CFA Institute for Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). Prior to joining CFA Institute, he was head of International Equities at Henderson Global Investors, a U.K.-based fund manager with both institutional and retail clients. He was responsible for managing equity teams covering Europe, the United States, Asia, and emerging markets in the areas of Global Equities, Technology, and Socially Responsible Investing.

Earlier in his career, Nitin held a variety of positions of senior responsibility at investment firms including Quorum Capital Management, a London-based subsidiary of New York Life, where he was head of Currency and Derivatives; International Finance Corporation, a private-sector arm of the World Bank in Washington, D.C., where he was an investment officer; and Shearson Lehman Global Asset Management in London, where he was head of Global Equities.


Jerry Moriarty,
Director of Policy,
Irish Association of Pension Funds (IAPF)



Jerry Moriarty joined the Irish Association of Pension Funds in 2007 as Director of Policy. As the voice of Irish pensions, the IAPF represents the interests of scheme members, trustees and sponsoring employers. Its members provide retirement security to over 260,000 employees, pay pensions to nearly 90,000 people and are responsible for some €90bn in retirement savings.

Jerry was Head of Compliance with the Irish regulator, the Pensions Board, for 6 years. Between February 1994 and October 2001 he worked as a senior manager in various Pensions Technical roles with Sun Life Financial of Canada in the UK. He began his career with Irish Life in Dublin in 1989.


Tim Reay,
Secretary of the International Employee Benefits Association (IEBA) and
Principal,
International Benefits,
Hewitt


Tim Reay is an international consulting actuary and a senior member of the International Benefits practice. He advises multinational corporations, organisations, and governments on all aspects of worldwide benefit provision for their employees. This includes scheme design, financing, valuation and administration, as well as consolidation of pension expense under international accounting standards, and the particular issues faced by internationally-mobile employees. He leads the Governance and Strategy specialist workgroup within the practice, and advises clients on all aspects of the governance process including benefit inventory, strategy formulation, and mechanisms for monitoring the process on an ongoing basis.

Tim joined the firm in 1984. He is based primarily in London, although between 1994 and 1997 was in Paris responsible for the firm's employee benefits activities in France. He has a degree in Mathematics from the University of Oxford, is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, and speaks several European languages. He is Secretary of the International Employee Benefits Association, a regular speaker at international conferences, and a regular contributor to the media.


Mark Adamson,
Client Director,
JLT Benefit Solutions


Mark Adamson is Client Director at JLT Benefit Solutions (JLT) working across JLT's administration services. He has more than 30 years experience in pensions, predominantly in outsourcing and administration systems. He previously worked for HS Administrative Services and Edis Partnership Ltd where he held the position of Managing Director for both organisations.

A well-known figure in the TPA market, Mark has chaired and spoken at many industry conferences as well as contributing regularly to the press. He is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development and is a Master of Arts in Human Resource Management.


Rob Barrett,

Swisscanto Funds Centre

 

Rob Barrett is Head of the UK Institutional Business at Swisscanto and is based in London. Rob has 23 years experience in the UK & European Institutional Markets both as a Portfolio Manager and more recently in Sales and Marketing.

He has worked for several firms during his career, starting out at Hill Samuel, SSgA, AXA Rosenberg and more recently HSBC Global Asset Management. Rob has been a member of the FTSE committee and is Secretary of the NAPF West London Group.


Craig R. Burnett,
Principal and European Head of DC Consulting,
Mercer




Craig Burnett is Mercer’s European Defined Contribution Consulting Leader. Based in Paris, Craig is responsible for setting Mercer’s regional DC business strategy; developing and delivering services to clients in every portion of the DC Supply Chain; and leading our team of DC consultants across the region. Craig has direct content expertise in DC product design and implementation; outsourcing; retirement program design; total rewards strategy; investment strategy; member advice solutions; and technology. He has worked with global and multinational clients across several industries including: financial services, technology, energy, and retail.

Craig has 22 years of experience consulting with clients on DC and related topics. Prior to joining Mercer, he practiced in various DC environments with Watson Wyatt Worldwide, Howard Johnson & Company, and Financial Engines. Craig graduated from the State University of New York (SUNY) with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Psychology.


Chris Connelly,
Senior Consultant,

Chris’ varied role at aquilaheywood sees him working in sales & marketing and product design. Chris’ 15 years in life & pensions administration, system support, software design and product management has seen him work in senior roles across the market spectrum at leading firms such as National Westminster Bank, Bacon & Woodrow, Paymaster and Fidelity. Through these firms, Chris has gained a great breadth of experience with in-house pensions administration, third party administration, financial services companies, local authorities and central government schemes.

Chris’ current activities include system and process design for pan-European arrangements and other multi-jurisdictional challenges, thereby extending aquilaheywood’s reach and experience in mainland Europe. Chris is a regular contributor to the pensions press and has worked on a number of industry initiatives including the emerging straight-through processing of investment transactions based on the ISO20022 message standard and the Pension Regulator’s data quality and record keeping guidelines.


Adrian Cooper,
Marketing and Business Development specialist

 

Adrian Cooper is a Marketing and Business Development specialist with 20 years experience working for organisations which are acknowledged leaders in their field. He advises, on a consultancy and interim basis, professional services firms, financial services companies and organisations from other sectors on business development and marketing strategy and implementation.

Adrian is experienced advising in the pensions field having worked in senior marketing and business development roles for organisations including Pearl Assurance, Sacker & Partners and Towers Perrin.


Neil Fatharly,
Marketing Director,
PRUPIM

 

Neil has been working at PRUPIM, the global real estate fund manager of M&G, for nearly three years where he has responsibility for the full marketing mix of PR, communications, product development support, capital raising and thought leadership campaigns. As regards links to industry, Neil is a Member of the NAPF Property Committee and Chair of AREF's Marketing and Strategy Committee. Prior to joining M&G, he has spent over twenty years working in fund management, either in a consultancy capacity as a Director at KPMG or in senior marketing and business development roles for CSFB, NICAM and Scottish Widows Investment Management.


John Hatchett,
Chairman of the Trustees of the Cadbury Schweppes Pension Fund and
Head of Pensions for Cancer Research UK

 

Until recently, John was Pensions Director for Cadbury Schweppes plc based in the UK. He headed the Pensions Team and had particular responsibility for the development of investment strategy for the Company’s UK plans (which have a current market value of £2 billion). He also worked with the group’s US, Canadian and Irish plans. He has worked on a wide range of employee benefits projects, including international employee share schemes.

John is a graduate and is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators and of the Pensions Management Institute.

He is now Chairman of the Trustees of the Cadbury Pension Fund. He is also Head of Pensions for Cancer Research UK.

John has also done technical work with the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and with representative organisations in the food and drinks industry.


Des Hogan,
Director of Institutional Clients,
Summit Global Investor Services

 

Des Hogan is responsible for new business development and client care at Summit Global Investor Services. He has been advising pension schemes and companies on investment and pension issues since 1988. Prior to joining Summit, Des worked for a number of specialist and traditional pension and investment consultancies.

He has worked in both Defined Benefit and Defined Contribution pension markets and also traditional and alternative investment markets. Whilst his main focus is in the UK, he has also dealt with pension scheme clients and companies across mainland Europe.


Stephen Holt,
Head of Institutional Business Europe,
Principal Global Investors (Europe)



Steve is head of institutional business, Europe at Principal Global Investors (Europe) based in London. He is responsible for institutional sales and marketing strategy in Europe and acts as head of sales and consultant relationships in the United Kingdom and Ireland, selling directly to institutions and indirectly through investment consultants. In addition, Steve has oversight of the client service function and serves as relationship director for various institutional clients.

Steve joined the firm in 2006. Prior to his current role, Steve was head of distribution, United Kingdom, at Santander Asset Management. His background also includes positions as head of institutional sales at Threadneedle Asset Management, as institutional sales director at Barclays Global Investors and as senior consultant and actuary at Hymans Robertson. Steve received a bachelor's degree in pure mathematics and statistics from Edinburgh University. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries.


Paul Kelly,
Consultant and Actuary,
Towers Watson




Paul is a Consultant and Actuary with Towers Watson. Paul joined Towers Perrin (which recently merged with Watson Wyatt) in 2004, following a number of years as Global Director of Pensions at Vodafone. Prior to this, he had worked for some 20 years in international benefits consulting and has dealt with many mergers and acquisitions. Paul has lived and worked in Brussels, Dublin, London and Paris and speaks fluent French.

In the past, Paul’s clients have included many significant multinationals including BP and Vodafone.
Paul is a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries, a member of the International Committee of the Pensions Board of the Faculty and Institute of Actuaries and a Senior Examiner at the International Employee Benefits Association.


Malcolm McLean, OBE,
Consultant,
Barnett Waddingham

 

Before joining Barnett Waddingham as a Consultant in April of this year, Malcolm McLean OBE had been Chief Executive of the Pensions Advisory Service (TPAS) for close to 13 years. Prior to that, he was General Manager/Secretary to the former Occupational Pensions Board.

His earlier career was mainly as a civil servant with the then Department of Social Security on pensions policy and at the “sharp end” in the delivery of benefits. He was seconded for a year in the financial services sector with Barclays Bank.

Malcolm is a regular speaker on pension courses and conferences and often broadcasts on radio and television. He is probably best known to daytime TV viewers for his frequent appearances on BBC2’s Working Lunch programme where for the last 7 years he has been the “resident pensions expert”.

During his time with TPAS Malcolm received several industry awards, the most recent being the “Greatest Single Contribution to Occupational Pensions 1998 to 2007” at the UK Pensions Awards held in April last year.


Leen Meijaard,
Head of Continental Europe Institutional business,
BlackRock



Leen Meijaard, Managing Director, is head of BlackRock's Continental Europe institutional business and the Benelux country manager for BlackRock's Global Client Group. He is also a member of the Leadership Committee.

Leen's service with the firm dates back to 2002, including his years with Merrill Lynch Investment Managers (MLIM), which merged with BlackRock in 2006. At MLIM, he headed relationship management in the Benelux region. Prior to joining MLIM in 2002, Leen was a research analyst and portfolio manager at Robeco. He also worked as an institutional sales director at Fidelity Investments and as a managing director of marketing at New Flag Asset Management.


John Owens,
Director,
Mirabaud Investment Management

 

With more than 20 years experience in the Pensions industry, John has been involved in a wide variety of functions, seeing pensions from almost every angle. Before joining Mirabaud Investment Management Limited, John had been a pensions manager, an employee benefits consultant and a trustee. He graduated from Strathclyde University where he read Law and Economics.



Preben Øye,
Consultant,
bfinance




Preben Øye joined bfinance’s Northern Europe team in 2008. Responsible for developing bfinance’s Nordic Investment Consulting business Preben works with institutional investors assisting them with their investment manager search and selection. Prior to joining bfinance, Preben was with Fidelity Investments where he was Relationship Manager for Nordic institutional clients. A Norwegian national, Preben obtained a BSc from London’s Brunel University as well as a degree from the University of Oslo.


Chris Parrott,
Pensions Manager,
House of Fraser

 

Chris Parrott is Pensions Manager for the House of Fraser department store group, managing pension schemes in both the UK and the Republic of Ireland. He has been involved in the administration and management of occupational pension schemes since 1982, covering both public and private sector arrangements.

Chris is an Associate of the Pensions Management Institute and a member of the International Advisory Committee for the Association of Investment Managers Sales Executives.


Paolo Sardi,
CEO,
ECPI




Paolo Sardi is one of the founding partners of ECPI. He previously worked as an analyst for Merrill Lynch in London and in the Real Estate financial advisory sector in Milan. He is a lecturer in Corporate Finance at the Real Estate Department, SDA - Bocconi School of Management. ECPI, part of Mittal SpA, an Italian investment merchant bank listed on the Italian Stock Exchange, is dedicated to sustainability research, ratings and indices.


Jay Shah,
Partner,
Pension Corporation



Jay is a partner at Pension Corporation. He was previously at PricewaterhouseCoopers as an actuarial adviser and then as Director in the Corporate Finance unit. He joined Prudential in 2003 as Corporate Development Director and led Prudential’s innovations in the large bulk annuity transfer market prior to setting up a separate bulk annuity venture, Synesis Life, which is now part of Pension Corporation. Jay has 20 years of experience in the financial services sector having qualified as an actuary in 1991.



Frans Verhaar,

Frans joined bfinance's London office in early 2007 as part of the research and development team where he worked with institutional investors from around the world to deliver their manager search and selection mandates. At the beginning of 2009, Frans moved across to business development to focus exclusively on the Dutch market where he works with the largest Dutch institutional investors.

Frans joined bfinance from ING in The Hague where he had been based since 2001, latterly in their Fixed Income and Corporate Treasury department managing liquidity, foreign exchange and interest rate risks for ING Insurance Holding. Prior to that, Frans worked as a portfolio manager for institutional clients with ING Investment Management. Frans is a CFA and CAIA charter holder and holds an MScBA from Erasmus University Rotterdam.


Laurens Vis,
Managing Director,
KAS BANK



Laurens Vis is the Managing Director of KAS BANK UK, an independent European specialist in securities services. In addition to steering KAS BANK’s strategy in the UK market, Laurens holds overall responsibility for UK sales and acquisition, relationship management, and product and market development.

During his distinguished 26-year career at KAS BANK, Laurens has held a number of director-level positions.

Laurens holds a doctorate in Economics from the University of Amsterdam, and is a former member of both the Euronext User Steering Committee and the International Society of Securities Administrators (ISSA).

Richard Warne,

Richard Warne joined Aviva Investors in October 2007. Prior to this he worked at JPMorgan Chase for seventeen years where he held a number of diverse roles, including managing JPMorgan’s relationship management Team in EMEA for the investor services business. Prior to this he was responsible for Investment and Execution Products globally for JPMorgan Investor Services and was responsible for Securities Lending in the EMEA region.

Richard worked for three years in New York, responsible for North America fund manager clients, and held positions in the offshore administration business, relationship management, the International Securities Lending Division, Credit and Risk Management and the legal department.

Richard has held executive positions for the International Securities Lenders Association (where he was the Global Custodian Representative) and was a Director of Equilend Europe Limited, a member of the Bank of England Stock Borrowers and Lenders Committee and The Bank of England Gilt Repo Code of Conduct Committee. Richard was previously employed as a solicitor for the law Firm of Slaughter and May where he specialised in corporate finance and capital markets.


Matt Wilmington,

Hewitt

 

Matt Wilmington is a senior consultant in the International Benefits and Global Risk Services practices at Hewitt. He has a background as a UK qualified actuary, spending the first part of his career advising UK companies and trustees on all aspects of pension funding and risk management. More recently, as part of the Hewitt International Benefits Practice, he has advised multinationals on global pension financing and risk management strategy and implementation. Matt was the author of the recent Hewitt Global Pensions Risk survey and is a frequent speaker on pension risk related matters.

Matt's recent focus has been on the rapidly expanding longevity risk management market and he has been appointed to lead the Hewitt European Longevity Solutions Group – a centre of excellence which is expanding into Continental Europe the experience gained by Hewitt on UK longevity.
