The European Pensions Awards 2009 judging panel
will be made up of approximately 25 INDEPENDENT judges from across
the European pensions sphere, to include providers, pension funds,
consultants and representatives from various European pensions
and investment associations.
European Pensions Awards Judging
Panel 2009:
• Paul Boerboom, Founding Partner,
Avida International, Netherlands
As founder and Managing Director of Avida International, Paul
Boerboom has been involved in the fiduciary outsourcing and restructuring
of several pension funds. The advisory assets of Avida’s
clients amount to over €49 billion. Recent clients include
the pension fund for the health insurance sector SBZ (€ 2.4
billion), and several corporate pension funds such as TNO (€
2 billion) and Randstad (€ 0.4 billion).
Boerboom brings extensive knowledge, international
experience and a large network to the pension world. In addition
to his strategic perspective on pension fund governance, investments
and risk management, his approach is distinct in its emphasis
on the people and cultural aspects. In working with his clients
Boerboom has developed new and alternative ways to evaluate, design
and implement pension organisations. Boerboom is also involved
in designing and implementing sustainable investment policies
for pension funds.

• David Lane, Partner,
Lane Clark & Peacock (Europe)
David Lane is an actuary with over 20 years’ pensions experience.
He qualified in 1990 and joined Lane Clark & Peacock (LCP)
as a Partner in 1996.
David is Head of LCP's M&A Practice and advises
both purchasers and sellers on the pensions aspects of both UK
and international deals, including due diligence, negotiations
with pension fund trustees and The Pensions Regulator. He has
extensive practical experience of advising companies on their
pensions strategy, including funding, asset strategy, accounting
for pensions costs, risk mitigation and leading negotiations between
companies and pension fund trustees. He also acts as the scheme
actuary for a varied portfolio of pension scheme clients.
In addition to his client responsibilities, David sits on the
Board of LCP Europe Limited and LCP's European businesses.
• René Van Leggelo,
Commercial Director, Group Pensions and Savings, AXA Entreprises,
France
René van Leggelo joined AXA Entreprises in Paris as Sales
Director after spending three years as a Director at Dexia Insurance
& Pensions Services in Luxembourg. Here he covered the topics
of pension and protection offers for expats, employee benefits
and international pension funds. Previously René has worked
at Gras Savoye – Willis in Paris, Scottish Equitable International
in Luxembourg; and Tillinghast Towers Perrin in Paris.
• Jerry Moriarty, Director
of Policy, Irish Association of Pension Funds (IAPF)
Jerry Moriarty joined the Irish Association of Pension Funds in
2007 as Director of Policy. As the voice of Irish pensions, the
IAPF represents the interests of scheme members, trustees and
sponsoring employers. Its members provide retirement security
to over 260,000 employees, pay pensions to nearly 90,000 people
and are responsible for some €90bn in retirement savings.
Jerry was Head of Compliance with the Irish regulator,
the Pensions Board, for 6 years. Between February 1994 and October
2001 he worked as a senior manager in various Pensions Technical
roles with Sun Life Financial of Canada in the UK. He began his
career with Irish Life in Dublin in 1989.
• Peter de Proft, Director
General of the European Fund and Asset Management Association
(EFAMA)
• Marjolein Sol, Head of
Mercer’s investment consulting business, Netherlands
Marjolein Sol joined Mercer in 2007 as head of Mercer’s
investment consulting business in the Netherlands. As such she
is focused on ensuring high quality investment advice is delivered
by consultants to more than seventy clients in the Netherlands.
Prior to Mercer, Marjolein was with PGGM, the €80+bn
pension fund for employees in the healthcare and social welfare
sector in the Netherlands. At PGGM she held the roles of Director
Fixed Income, Treasury & Commodities and later as Director
Equities. Previous to PGGM she spent more than six years with
Rabobank International as head of Structured Derivatives and as
head of Credit Derivatives. Marjolein started her career at the
Treasury Research department of Postbank (part of ING).
• Michael Steiner, Sales
Director, Germany and Austria, Investec Asset Management
Michael Steiner joined Investec Asset Management in 2008 as Sales
Director, Austria and Germany within the Continental European
Sales team. Michael brings around fifteen years’ experience
in the asset management and private banking industry in Germany,
having worked for Commerzbank, Dresdner Bank and Citigroup Asset
Management before joining LGT Capital Management in 2003 where
he was most recently Head of Institutional Sales for Germany.
